Lung Cancer : Staging

principles determining the stages of lung cancer.

Each stage of cancer shows the prevalence of cancer in the body.Determination estimate tumor size and it penetrates lung cancer stage includes the surrounding tissue, detection of cancer cells in the regional lymph nodes, which carry lymph drainage from the lungs, and detecting distant metastases, i.e. cancer lesions in other organs.

tumor staging (determining its stage) - is a very important process that allows the physician to choose the most appropriate method of treatment.It was found that lung cancer therapy is clearly dependent on the stage of the disease.Additionally, step plays a significant role in determining prognosis and treatment of the life of a particular patient.The larger it is, the worse the prognosis for life and the higher the probability of spread of the tumor and its recurrence after treatment.

Methods of examination for staging lung cancer

  • blood chemistry (allows to detect the presence of metastases in the liver or bones);
  • X-ray chest (determines the size of the tumor);
  • computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging (determined by the size and position of the tumor in the lungs, as well as detect metastases in the brain, or adrenal glands);
  • bone scan;
  • positron emission tomography.

In some cases staging requires surgery.

classification of lung cancer in stages depending on the type of tumor.

Stages of non-small cell lung cancer

  • Stage I: the tumor does not extend beyond the lungs;
  • stage II and III: the tumor is within the thoracic cavity;stage III tumor can spread to neighboring organs with light;
  • Stage IV: The cancer extends beyond the chest cavity and spreading to distant organs.

Stages of small cell lung cancer

  • localized (local) neoplastic process means that the cancer is confined to their primary area of ‚Äč‚Äčorigin and does not go beyond the chest cavity;
  • common neoplastic process means that the cancer is outside the chest cavity and spreading to distant organs.
