Articular chondrocalcinosis : Causes and Symptoms

Chondrocalcinosis - a chronic, slowly progressive disease caused by deposition of microcrystals of calcium salts in the articular cartilage and periarticular tissues.

pathology occurs mainly in the 55-60 years old, with the same frequency in men and women. As manifestations of the disease in many respects it is similar to gout.

main factors affecting the development of chondrocalcinosis:

  • Hereditary predisposition.
  • pseudogout often develops in patients with hemophilia and hemochromatosis, anemia and other diseases associated with impaired iron metabolism in the body (hemosiderin deposition promotes chondrocalcinosis).
  • diseases, leading to disruption of calcium metabolism and inorganic pyrophosphate (primary hyperparathyroidism, amyloidosis, hypothyroidism, etc.).
  • conditions caused by degenerative changes in the cartilage tissue (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and age, etc.).

Development chondrocalcinosis

Normally pyrophosphate - an intermediate metabolite in the synthesis of cartilage

collagen. It is formed by cartilaginous cells, chondrocytes, but subsequently destroyed by tissue enzyme pyrophosphatase.

In some diseases there is a decrease of the enzyme activity, for example at elevated levels in tissues of copper or iron, calcium pyrophosphate salts so deposited first deep articular cartilage, and then on its surface, and then in the synovium and the periarticular tissues.

period of intensive accumulation of pyrophosphate crystals in the intraarticular (synovial) fluid and synovial membrane leads to arthritis exacerbations (attacks, or attacks), accompanied by severe swelling and tenderness of the joints.

main manifestations chondrocalcinosis

chondrocalcinosis acute attack usually develops within one or two days, manifested by severe pain and swelling of joints, redness of the skin over it and limiting the range of motion. However, unlike gout, knee joints most often affected, at least in the process involves several joints, including the upper limbs.

often attack accompanied by fever and general malaise, inflammatory changes may stay from one week to six weeks, but are held in the beginning of the disease completely.

attacks may be repeated after a few weeks or a few years.Over time, the frequency of attacks is increasing, the process involves increasing the number of joints, sometimes involved in the process is not all painful joints - migratory nature of pain.

After calming down aggravation of the patient can continue to disturb pains in the joints, sometimes it is a little swelling.Over time, range of motion gradually decreases, deformed joints.

In some cases, the process involved in the spine, then the patient has pain, sciatica resembling symptoms, leading to a decrease in the mobility of a particular spine. In the later stages of the disease process involved in periarticular tissues and tendons.

Hereditary chondrocalcinosis usually occurs before 30 years of age and occurs with involvement of multiple joints, including small joints of the hands and spine, accompanied by severe clinical manifestations and common, progressive calcification, leading to restriction of mobility of the spine due to calcifications his anterior longitudinal ligament - ossificans ligamentoz.
