Weight loss may be an indication of Alzheimer's disease

Long before the appearance of the first symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in humans begins a marked decrease in body weight.

accepted that increased body weight in middle age is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, but in a recent study it has been shown that the increased body mass in old age are almost never combined with this type of dementia.

Losing weight is one of the earliest symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, occurring long before the memory loss.

In particular, according to the researcher Jeffrey M. Burns of the Center for the Study of Alzheimer's Disease University of Kansas (USA), among elderly people without any clinical manifestations of Alzheimer's disease the normal body weight or decrease (body mass index less than 25) combined with the identificationcertain structures in the brain, which is the first sign of disease.

The study included only those patients who do not have memory disorders, to eliminate the possibility of weight loss as a result of the effects of the disease when a per

son forgets to eat.

Scientists believe that the weight loss may be an early manifestation of the disease."We tend to think that Alzheimer's disease - a disease of the brain. However, it may be that this is not true and this pathology is systemic, "- says Jeffrey M. Burns.

connection between Alzheimer's disease and BMI

Prior to this study, Burns et al have shown that Alzheimer's disease is combined with a decrease in bone density and loss of muscle mass, which also detected long before memory loss.

In one recent study, published in the journal Neurology, involved 506 people, without any clinical manifestations of memory loss, with a slight decrease in memory and with a verified diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

To find morphological markers of Alzheimer's disease all participants performed a brain MRI.

fact that in this pathology in the brain revealed certain structures - β-amyloid plaques, which may cause memory and reduction.

It was shown that 85% of normal body weight or lower, even without any clinical manifestations of the disease, the amyloid plaques are detected in the brain.Among the participants with increased body weight, this figure was only 48%.

Inaccuracies research

Many scientists question the fairness of this study. The fact that there is no indication who was a member of a group with a reduced body weight: whether these people are always astenikov or decrease in body weight occurred in the elderly.

Moreover, given the age of the patient, can be called a large number of reasons, which could lead to weight loss, in addition to Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, the information content of the body weight on the further development of Alzheimer's disease should not be exaggerated, although the body mass reduction in old age, in any case cause for concern.

Further studies are needed to confirm or refute the results.Perhaps the explanation of the data will finally unravel the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease.
