Alzheimer's disease and obesity

Studies have shown that overweight people more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease, while patients with initial stage of the disease is often a body mass index lower than that of others.

Alzheimer's disease - a very common disease. It is characteristic of the elderly, causing brain damage and results in loss of memory, thinking and memory disorders and other neurological symptoms.

Obesity is also a common problem of the modern world and is a risk factor for the development of many diseases. The researchers decided to find out whether there is a connection between these two common conditions.

Weight and Alzheimer

study published in the journal Neurology, revealed a relationship between the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and body mass index (BMI).

In a study by the American Academy of Neurology was attended by 506 people, who have undergone a thorough examination with the help of modern equipment, its analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid was held at the presence of biomarkers for Alzheimer'

s disease, which appear long before the first symptoms of the disease.

The study

The study found that among people without any problems with memory and thinking, or with mild symptoms, who in this case were found as biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease, body mass index (BMI) was lower thanother's.

example, 85% of patients with symptoms of Alzheimer's disease who have a BMI of less than 25, were found beta-amyloid plaques, whereas people with overweight plaques occurred in only 48%.Similar figures were observed in people without symptoms of the disease manifested.

The results show that changes in the brain caused by Alzheimer's disease, are associated with metabolic disorders, even in the earliest stages of the disease.

Scientists believe that this link may be due to damage to the hypothalamus - the brain department, which plays an important role in the regulation of energy metabolism and nutrition.

Further study of this question should make it clear whether weight loss caused by systemic response to an unknown disease, or low body mass index is a feature that shows a predisposition to the development of Alzheimer's disease in the long term.
