Bulimia affects brain function

Scientists from the University of Colorado (USA) studied the brains of women suffering from bulimia in an attempt to find out what neural mechanisms associated with this eating disorder.

Bulimia - a serious eating disorder characterized by bouts of overeating and then attempts to compensate for the damage to the exterior caused by these attacks.

To avoid excess weight, patients with bulimia after eating too much trying to artificially induce vomiting, taking diuretics and laxatives, pace yourself exercise.

Despite the relative prevalence of this disorder, scientists still do not fully represent what is happening in the brain during the development of bulimia and what neural processes and mechanisms affecting eating disorder.

Bulimia violates reward system in the brain

The study, published in the journal Biological Psychiatry, researchers looked at the activity of the dopamine system of the brain as the promotion of women suffering from bulimia, and at absolutely healthy.

Dopamine is an essentia

l neurotransmitter of the brain and is involved in the regulation of behavior in learning and motivation processes.

The researchers found that women suffering from bulimia, has been weakened by the nerve response in the areas of the brain that are part of the promotion / awarding system. And this response was associated with the frequency of binge eating episodes.

Thus, attacks of overeating and subsequent purification of the body can cause a weakening of the response of the brain to initiate the reaction and further changes and disturbances in the function of some parts of the brain.

Prospects for the treatment of bulimia

This discovery is important for several reasons.Firstly, the study revealed the important role of promoting the system and related dopamine function.

Secondly, the behavior characteristic of bulimia directly affects the brain reward system, and it remains unknown whether the data is returned to normal brain function after recovery.

Third, the neurotransmitter dopamine may be a specific target for the treatment of bulimia using special drugs.

This study is the first to assume that connected with the dopamine reward system in the brain that regulates our behavior in relation to the search of food also plays an important role in the development of bulimia.

Women with bulimia significant reduction in the activity of promoting the system was detected, and the increasingly manifest bouts of binge eating and purging the body, the less active, this area became.

Thus, the study showed that eating disorder directly affects the function of the brain. At the same time, thanks to this study made possible the invention of new drugs for the treatment of bulimia, affecting certain brain structures.
